Outstanding scholar of physiocracy, Turgot, and Adam Smith, whose work on the eighteenth century culminated in his painstaking edition of Smith’s Lectures on Jurisprudence (1977). He also made a major contribution to the recent revival of Marxian economics by his patient and undogmatic exposition of Marx’s ideas during the cold-war period of the 1940s and 1950s.
