Roy J. Adams was born on June 28, 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He is son of Robert and Marie (maiden name, Gaughran; present surname, Gibbs) Adams.
He received the B.A. degree from Pennsylvania State University (summa cum laude) in 1967, the M.A. and Ph.D. degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Wisconsin in 1970 and 1973 respectively.
In 1967-1968 he was an industrial relations specialist at Chase Manhattan Bank, New York City, United States. At McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada he was an assistant professor in 1973-1978, an associate professor in 1978-1983, professor of industrial relations since 1984. Now he is professor emeritus at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. At the same time, in 1975-1976 he was fact finder and mediator at Ontario Education Relations Commission, Ontario, Canada. In 1978-1979 Roy J. Adams was chairperson and executive director at Commission on Educational Leave and Productivity. He has conducted research and lectured at universities around the world including Oxford (England), INSEAD (France), Tribhuvan (Nepal) and Thammasat (Thailand).
He served as member of executive board and president of the Canadian Industrial Relations Association in 1978-1983 and 1981-1982 respectively.
Roy J. Adams served as co-chairperson of Study Group on Industrial Relations as a Field and Industrial Relations Theory in 1989-1993. He was also Founder and senior listmaster of International Employee Relations Network since 1994. Adams served as Canadian Pacific Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto in 1990, Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Western Australia in 1996, as Director of McMaster’s Theme School on International Justice and Human Rights in 1996-1997, and in 2009-2010 as Sallows Chair of Human Rights at the University of Saskatchewan’s Faculty of Law. He has served on the editorial board of professional journals in several countries (the United States, England, Australia and Italy).
In 1997 Adams founded the Society for the Promotion of Human Rights in Employment whose mission is to promote awareness, understanding and respect for core labour rights as human rights. Roy J. Adams received the Gérard Dion Award for outstanding contributions to knowledge of Canadian and international industrial relations in 1997. In 2015 he was named a Fellow of the U.S.-based Labour and Employment Relations Association for his lifetime “contributions of unusual distinction to the field.” In 2016 he established the Canadian Freedom of Association Award which is also known as the Roy J. Adams Freedom of Association Award.
