Taft, Royal Chapin was born on February 14, 1823 in Northbridge, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Orsmus and Margaret (Smith) Taft.

Education

Educated Worcester Academy. (honorary Master of Arts, Brown, 1891).

Career

Engaged in manufacturing cotton and woolen goods, 1849, with Royal Chapin, Providence, Rhode Island, as Royal Chapin & Company. Afterward acquired large interests in other mills. Trustee Providence Institution for Savings.

Membership

Member Providence City Council, 1855-1856. Member Rhode Island House of Representatives, 1880-1884.
