Roberts, Ruby Altizer was born on April 22, 1907 in Floyd Company, Vermont, United States. Daughter of Waddy William and Dana Adeline (Cummings) Altizer.

Education

Graduate, Christianburg (Virginia) High School. Nursing course, Norfolk (Virginia) Protestant Hospital. Doctor of Humane Letters, College William and Mary, 1961.

Career

Freelance writer, since 1939;newspaper correspondent. Representative of Spirit of Virginia, 1993.

Achievements

  • Roberts received a number of awards and honours in connection with her writing. In 1950 she was named Poet Laureate of Virginia, and in 1992 the General Assembly of Virginia named her Poet Laureate Emerita of Virginia. In 1961 she was conferred an honorary humanities doctorate by the College of William & Mary in Virginia.
