During World War 1 drafted into Civil Defense unit. From November 1915 ensign, 436th Novola- dozhsk Infantry Regt. After 1917 February Revol elected member, regt comt.
Co-founder and co-ed, 12th Army Bolshevik newspaper “Okopnaya pravda”. July 1917 arrested by Provisional Government. During 1917 October Revol released from prison.
Commanded Red Guard and sailors detachment which fought at Pulkovo against Kerenskiy and General Krasnov’s troops. November 1917 transferred with his detachment to the Ukraine. 24 February 1918 his troops took Rostov-on-Don.
March-April 1918 commanded 5th Soviet Army (later renamed the 2nd Special Army). From Summer 1918 commanded special brigade (from September 1918 1st Special Ukraine Brigade) as part of 9th Army on Southern Front. 15 November 1918 seriously wounded in action near village Zhelnovka.
