Charles Rudolf Frim studied at the Prague Conservatory with Josef Jiranek and Antogin Antonin and settled in the United States in 1906, where, after a period as a concert pianist, he devoted most of his time to composition.
The best-known of his 33 light operas are The Firefly (1912), Rose Marie (1924), and The Vagabond King (1925). Friml's operettas generally concerned gallants and princesses moving through fairy-tale complexities of the plot. Songs from his operettas include The Indian Love Call, Only a Rose, Song of the Vagabonds, Giannina Mia, and Sympathy.
