The photographer worked as a retail tradesman initially, then served in the army during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). He took up photography about 1880 and, in 1883, opened his own studio. Diihrkoop traveled to Paris in 1900 and to London in 1901. He opened a second studio in Berlin while still maintaining his Hamburg operation. Diihrkoop's work was widely exhibited.
A portrait photographer, Diihrkoop abandoned conventional studio portraiture about 1886 and, instead, visited subjects in their homes and photographed them in the open air.
