Rudy Kagerer grew up on Long Island Sound, and as a youth sailed and boated, often far from land, depending on the lighthouses as his beacons. In the early 1980s, Rudy and his wife drove down the southeastern coast looking for lighthouses, but could not find a guidebook to tell them where they were. So they wrote one and formed their own publishing company to develop and market the book. They had great success and completely rewrote the guidebook in 1996, adding North Carolina.
In addition to writing, Kagerer enjoyed lecturing on the lighthouses of the U.S. and the world. He also worked as a consultant at Matrix Corporation, associate professor of Management at the University of Georgia and private consultant and trainer.
Rudy Kagerer married Doris Emma Munich, a legal secretary, on June 23, 1956. They have two children - Eric Richard and Daniel Wayne.
