(The essential history of Alexander the Great, compelling ...)
The essential history of Alexander the Great, compelling and brilliantly realized Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), who led the Macedonian army to victory in Egypt, Syria, Persia and India, was perhaps the most successful conqueror the world has ever seen. Yet although no other individual has attracted so much speculation across the centuries, Alexander himself remains an enigma. Curtius' History offers a great deal of information unobtainable from other sources of the time. A compelling narrative of a turbulent era, the work recounts events on a heroic scale, detailing court intrigue, stirring speeches and brutal battlesamong them, those of Macedonia's great war with Persia, which was to culminate in Alexander's final triumph over King Darius and the defeat of an ancient and mighty empire. It also provides by far the most plausible and haunting portrait of Alexander we possess: a brilliantly realized image of a man ruined by constant good fortune in his youth. Q. Curtius Rufus (1st century CE) is one of the most important historians of Alexander the Great. However, existing editions in use today are philologically unsatisfactory for a number of reasons, and the aim of this work is to present a sounder text. This edition is the first to pay adequate attention to the second family of manuscripts, as well as placing the conjectures of the respective philologists in their correct context.

Quintus Curtius Rufus was born in Greece. Of his personal history nothing is known, nor can his date be fixed with certainty.
Modern authorities regard Quintus Curtius Rufus as a rhetorician who flourished during the reign of Claudius (a. d. 41-54).
His work (De Rebus gestis Alexandri Magni) originally consisted of ten books, of which the first two are entirely lost, and the remaining eight are incomplete.
Although the work is uncritical, and shows the author's ignorance, of geography, chronology and military matters, it is written in a picturesque style. There are numerous editions: (text) T. Vogel (1889), P. H. Damste (1897), E. Hedicke (1908); (with notes), T. Vogel (1885 and later), M. Croiset (1885), H. W. Reich (1895), C. Lebaigue (1900), T. Stangl.
There is an English translation by P. Pratt (1821).
