Participated in Defiance Campaign, 1952, raised funds for more than 8000 people arrested during campaign. Involved in Women’s marches of 1956. Left country temporarily, 1962, feared for her safety after arrests took place during her absence, ten years later her children joined her in exile.
Worked for ANC, Dar-es-Salaam, Morocco. Secretary, to Oliver Tambo, ANC President, Lusaka. South African Delegate, Women’s International Democratic Federation, Berlin, 1976-1979.
ANC Chief Representative, London. Member, ANC National Executive Committee, portfolio of head of the ANC board of religious affairs. Involved in Women’s Section of ANC, internal policy Commission and served on political and military Council.
Following unbanning of ANC, formed part of team which helped talks with South African Govt, representatives, Groote Schuur, Cape Town, 1990. Professional career: Secretary, Legal Practice of Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela, until Mandela arrested and firm forced to close. General Secretary, Theatre Company until 1962.
She joined the African National Congress in 1954, and was elected to the National Executive Committee of the Women's League.
She was elected as a member of parliament in South Africa"s first democratic election in 1994, appointed ambassador to Switzerland from 1996 to 2000, became mayor of Vryburg after returning, and served as an executive member of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Veteran"s Association.
