Steward was born on September 19, 1944 in Basel, Switzerland; the daughter of Robert and Elisabeth Silberschmidt.
Steward received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Basel in 1978.
Steward began her career as a postdoctoral fellow of the department of biology at the University of Virginia in 1979. Two years later she took the same position at Friedrich Miescher Laboratorium der Max Planck Gesellschaft and held it for a year.
Also Ruth served as a senior research biologist of the department of molecular biology at Princeton University from 1987 to 1994. Since 1994 she has been a professor at Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University.
On April 6, 1971 Ruth Steward married David Eyre Steward.
