Ryohaku Sano was born in 1558. A retainer of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, he was a son of Masatsuna Echizen-no-Kami.
After his elder brother, Sadatsuna, became head of his family, he traveled in many provinces, training himself in military arts. Served Hideyoshi and spearheaded his force in the attack on the Hojos in Odawara. He routed the Hojos and was rewarded with the territory of Sano in Kozuke Province (Gumma Prefecture), with a fief of 120,000 koku. He handed the territory over to Nobuyoshi, his son-in-law and lived in retirement.
