Ryotai was a Buddhist priest Ryotai of the Shingon Sect.
Ryotai was born in Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture) in 1622. His other name was Shungen.
Ryotai became a priest (1630). He went to Kyoto (1639) to study at the Kohoji Temple and later at various other places. In 1657, Ryotai started preaching at the Hasedera Temple at Buzan in Yamato Province (Nara Prefecture). When he returned to his native place (1659), the lord of Satsuma asked him to stay but he declined and went back to Buzan.
He moved to the Shojiji Temple in Omi Province (Shiga Prefec - ture) (1669) and retired to the Hannyaji Temple in Kyoto (1671). He was appointed 11th head priest of the Hasedera Temple by order of Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. Was promoted to bishop. Wrote many books. His commentaries are noted fo r conciseness.
