Ryoun Takamatsu was born in 1836.
Ryoun Takamatsu Studied medicine under osho Ishikawa in Edo (1859) and the Dutch language under Koan Ogata, to become physician in ordinary first to the Hitotsubashi family and then to the Shogunate.
Ryoun Takamatsu hastened home to join Takeaki Enomoto in resisting the new government while acting as director of Hakodate Hospital.
After the Meiji Restoration (1868) he was pardoned and allowed to practice in Tokyo (1870). Later was director of Tokyo Medical Society and founded Doaisha, a charitable hospital - the first of its kind in Japan.
