After attending the clan school Ryozo Kuruhara came under the influence of Shoin Yoshida. They both were later arrested by the Shogun on charges of treason.
Later during the Kaei Era (1848-1854) he was in charge of military administration of his clan, and then he was recommended to teach at Yubikan School in Edo.
Ryozo Kuruhara was a bitter opponent of Uta Nagai who wanted to open the door for foreign trade and commerce. To show his contempt, he began hatching a plot to attack foreigners in Yokohama but he was arrested. Soon after that he committed suicide.
