S. Lee Rothschild earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute in conjunction with the University of Chicago in 1975. She received a Master of Fine Arts in museology from the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York, in conjunction with the George Eastman House in 1977.
S. Lee Rothschild was a photography critic for Windy City News in 1979. In 1978 she co-directed Facets Gallery in Chicago and was head of the plate-making division of the Black Box Collotype Studio. In 1976 she worked in sales, merchandising, and exhibitions for Billy Hork Galleries in Chicago, and before that worked for two years as a conservation intern and archivist with the Rush Rhees Library at the University of Rochester in New York.
S. Lee Rothschild has also concentrated on extreme close-ups of people. She also works in 35mm black-and-white.
