Kupchan was born on November 10, 1922 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Hyman and Rebecca (Fishgold) Kupchan.
Kupchan received a Bachelor of Science degree from City College of New York in 1941. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1945 from Columbia University.
He was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws degree by the University of Hokkaido for his new and original approach to the chemistry of cancer control.
Kupchan began his career as a lecturer at Columbia University in 1945. Three years later he took a position of an instructor of chemistry at Harvard University. Then in 1955, Solomon became a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin and held it until 1969. Also he served as a John W. Mallet professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia in 1969-1976.
Kupchan was a consultant to the National Cancer Institute and served on several of its committees. He was a member of the Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics section of the National Institutes of Health and that organization's chemistry studies section. Also Solomon was a member of American Chemical Society, American Pharmaceutical Association, Chemical Society of London, Society for Economic Botany, New York Academy of Sciences and Mexican Chemical Society.
On March 28, 1954 Solomon Kupchan married Nancy R. Slater. They had two sons.
