He received his Bachelor of Science with honors at Andhra University in 1944, Master of Science (Chemical Technology) at Andhra University in 1945 and Doctor of Science at Andhra University in 1950. He did research on Indian Medicinal Plants and was a specialist in Pharmaceutical and Phyto-chemistry.
S. Sankara Subramanian worked as assistant lecturer at Annamalai University in 1945, as pharmacist at Andhra University in 1945-1947, lecturer in pharmaceutical chemistry at Andhra University in 1947-1959.
Also he worked as research assistant, C.S.J.R. Scheme in 1952-1954 and had been a reader in Chemistry at Medical College, Pondicherry since 1959. Examiner for degrees in Pharmacy of Andhra, Kerala and Madras Universities. He toured U.S.A. in 1955 and was specially interested in Pharmacognosy and Biochemistry. He wrote about 40 articles and research papers.
He was a fellow of Royal Institute of Chemistry in London and member of Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Society of Sigma XI (U.S.A.).
