Saburozaemon Ikeda was born in Kazusa Province (Chiba Prefecture).
During the Keicho Era the local Governor of the Shogunate imposed a tax on rice on the villagers of Tagawa which was too heavy to bear. Saburozaemon realizing the injustice of this tax appealed to the Shogunate several times and at last the Shogunate sent officials to investigate the fact. The officials declared the tax to be too heavy and it was lightened, but the Shogunate somehow took a disliking to Saburozaemon and got him executed. Out of gratitude to their benefactor the villagers built a shrine to his memory in the village.
