Saina Nehwal born 17 March 1990 in Dhindar, Hisar, Haryana is an Indian badminton player who attained a career best ranking of 2 in December 2010 by Badminton World Federation.[2] She is the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics.

Background

Saina Nehwal was born in a Jat family at Hisar in Haryana and completed first few years of her schooling from Campus School. Her Father Harvir Singh originally hails from village "Dhindar" which falls under Modinagar Tehsil in District Ghaziabad(U.P). Harvir Singh initially worked in CCS HAU and they then had their residence in the University Campus. He later shifted to Hyderabad & so Saina spent her growing years in Hyderabad, India. Her foray into the world of badminton was influenced by her father Dr. Harvir Singh, a scientist at the Directorate of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad and her mother Usha Nehwal, both of whom were former badminton champions in Haryana. She is the top ranked player (women) in Indian Badminton history. In 2012, journalist and former NDTV editor T. S. Sudhir wrote a biography on Saina.Badminton star Saina Nehwal, powered by Olympic Gold Quest, won Bronze medal at the London 2012 Games.. She is the first Indian woman to reach the singles quarterfinals at the Olympics (Beijing 2008), semifinals of All England Badminton Championship (2010) and the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships (Pune 2008). Saina scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament after clinching the Indonesia Open in Jakarta in June 2009, reaching a career high of No. 6 in the world ranking in the process.

She was selected for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri Award for the year 2010 for her stellar performance in 2009. In August 2009, Saina was bestowed with the prestigious Arjuna Award. She was also named The Most Promising Player in 2008 by the International Badminton Federation.

Career

The renowned Indian badminton star, Saina was also under-19 nationwide champion. Saina designed record by successful the famous Oriental Satellite TV Badminton competition (India country Chapter) two times, fetching the only first contestant to do this. In the year 2006, Saina Nehwal showed up on the international landscape when saina became very first Native Indian female to come first a four plus star competition, the Malaysia Start. Arriving into the competition just like 86th seeds, she went on to stagger numerous top seeded badminton players such as the then globe variety four renowned Xu H. before overpowering famous J. W. or Pei of the country of Malaysia for an important headline. The same season Saina was also the sprinter upbeat in the 2006 season BWF globe Younger competition, where Saina missing an intricate demeanor go with against top seeds China W. Yihan, the great gamer. She also did excellent in the important season of 2008 year by fetching the only first Native Indian citizen to triumph the prestigious globe Younger Badminton Tournament by defeating ninth seeded Japoneses Sayaka Sato with 21–9, 21–18.
