Cerchio was born on March 4, 1964 in Bayonne, New Jersey, United States; the son of Salvatore and Anne Cerchio.
Cerchio received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tufts University in 1985. Eight years later he earned his Master of Sciences degree in Marine sciences from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. In 2003, Salvatore was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan.
Cerchio began his career as a conservation scientist at Wildlife Conservation Society in 2004. Since 2015 he has been a guest investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Also Salvatore has served as a visiting scientist at New England Aquarium since 2015.
Salvatore is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission and a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Cetacean Specialist Group. He is also a member of Society for Marine Mammalogy.
On April 14, 2004 Salvatore Cerchio married Danielle Marie Cholewiak.
