Mr. Chairman, Honorable Members of the European Parliament, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, Allow me, first of all, to express, on behalf of SWAPO and the embattled Namibian people, deep gratitude for this unique opportunity which you Honorable members of the European Parliament have accorded me to be here today in order to brief you about the plight, the hopes and the aspirations of the oppressed Namibian people. Mr. Chairman, I would also like to seize this opportunity to register, on behalf of SWAPO, sincere thanks to the EEC member countries for humanitarian and educational assistance rendered to the Namibian people, through our movement. Your governments and your people have bilaterally made considerable medical, food and clothing donations to our movement in order to enable us to alleviate the health, social and educational problems of thousands of Namibian refugees and exiles who have fled their country, Namibia, in order to escape the brutal and racist repression and colonial domination in our country...

Born in Ovamboland, a region in northern Namibia near the Angolan border, on May 12, 1929, Samuel Daniel Nujoma was educated in missionary schools there and in Windhoek, the country's capital.
In the course of this protest Nujoma was arrested and jailed for a brief period.
During the late 1950's Nujoma's political awakening began.
In 1960 Nujoma traveled to New York to present a petition to the United Nations protesting the illegal South African occupation of Namibia.
From 1966 through 1988 SWAPO, led by Nujoma, continued to attack South African strongholds in Namibia from refuges in Zambia and, after Angolan independence in 1975, from Angola.
At the same time Nujoma worked to raise support for Namibian independence from his headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia, and from other world capitals, including Moscow and Havana.
He also met, from 1977 on, with representatives of Western nations seeking to persuade South Africa to agree to transfer power in Namibia through internationally supervised free elections.
A significant breakthrough finally came in late 1988, when SWAPO and South Africa agreed to a cease-fire and a plan for Namibian independence based on a United Nations resolution adopted in 1978.
Known as Security Council Resolution 435, the plan called for an end to the fighting, a phased withdrawal of South African forces from Namibia, and elections under UN supervision.
On March 21, 1990, the day that Namibia became a sovereign nation, Nujoma was sworn in as the country's first president.
Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960.
He played an important role as leader of the national liberation movement in campaigning for Namibia's independence from South African rule. He established the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) in 1962 and launched a guerrilla war against the apartheid government of South Africa in 1966, beginning after the United Nations withdrew the mandate for South Africa to govern the territory.
Nujoma led SWAPO during the lengthy Namibian War of Independence, which lasted from 1966 to 1989.

In 1959 he became active in Namibia's first African political group, the South West African National Union (SWANU), participating in a protest against the forced removal of black and brown Namibians from a residential township within Windhoek to a new settlement on the outskirts of the city.
Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960.
Nujoma married Kovambo Katjimune on 6 May 1956. The couple had three sons and two daughters; Utoni Nujoma (1952), John Nujoma (1955), Sakaria "Zacky" Nujoma (1957), Nelago Nujoma (1959)—who died at 18 months while Nujoma was in exile—and Usuta Nujoma (1965). Two decades elapsed before his wife joined him abroad. Nujoma's first-born son, Utoni, is a high ranking politician and member of SWAPO who is both a member of Cabinet and National Assembly of Namibia. His youngest son, Zacky, is a geologist by profession who has interest in business and mining.
