Baker was born on July 29, 1909, in Paterson, New Jersey, United States.
Baker received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1929.
Baker, a former advertising agency executive, turned to writing self-help and diet books in the 1960s. He began his advertising career at the bottom—as a copywriter in Manhattan. He began writing books in 1955 and his first self-help book was 1959’s Casebook of Successful Ideas for Advertising and Selling.
Baker became an author full time in 1963, though he still worked as a freelance business consultant.
Teaming up with experts in the fields of medicine and diet, Baker co-wrote several self-improvement books in the 1960s and 1970s including The Doctor’s Quick Weight Loss Diet (with Doctor Irwin Stillman in 1967), The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet (with Doctor Herman Tarnower in 1979) and The Doctor's Quick TeenAge Diet (with Stillman in 1971). He also wrote several advice books on gardening and in 1984 penned Erotic Focus: The New Way to Enhance Your Sexual Pleasure. Baker’s short essays were published in McCalls, Popular Science and Suburbia Today.
