Sampu Sugiyama was a Japanese haiku poet. He turned to haiku because he was deaf. One of the 10 most distinguished disciples of Basho Matsuo. The Bashoan Cottage in Fukagawa, Edo, where Basho spent his later years, was a villa of Sampu. Personal name: Kazumoto (pseudonym: Sampu) was better known as Ichibe Koiya (Carp dealer), his family engaging in fish wholesale in Tokyo.
Career
Sampu was an official fish merchant of the Bakufu government in Tokyo. He was also an ardent haikai poet and supported Matsuo Basho in many ways, helping him to establish his Basho school of haikai.
