Gmelin Samuel Gottlieb Georg made a trip around France and Holland. Had been living in Russia since 1767. Was a participant of Academic Expeditions in 1768-1774. Caspian coast of Caspian Sea, Caucasus, north-west of Iran were explored under Gmelin direction. Gmelin’s expedition spent winter of 1768-1769 in Voronezh. Gmelin excavated in Kostensk, thought that there were “elephant ivories”, wrote an essay about greenery in Pavlovsk outskirts. Got to Azov through Ostrogozhsk, Pavlovsk and Cherkassk, and in August of 1769 headed to Tsatitsyn from there. In 1774 on the way from Iran he got captured and there he died.
