I feel that I am in this position in regard to the theory of cancer. The known truth of this disease is so small that it admits of many theories, and medi cal men have not been wanting to spin them; so that there is but little chance for me to propound a new one, without the risk of doing injustice to the material used as a basis for this paper, which I would rather have appear as a practical contribution. Nevertheless, I find I cannot get through with my subject without the aid of some kind of theory; and the doctrine which accords best with the facts of my experience is a combination of the cell doctrine and the exudation doctrine.
