Better known for his legal career, he nevertheless published various lectures, during his period as first holder of the Whately Chair, which included remarkable economic insights. His analysis of the determinants of value, distribution of income and nature of capital are all in advance of contemporary thinking. The marginalist aspects of his writings possibly owe something to his considerable ability as a mathematician.
