Adickes was born on July 14, 1933 in New York City, New York, United States; the daughter of August Ernst Adickes and Edythe Louise (Oberschlake) Adickes.
Adickes received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Douglass College in 1954. Ten years later she earned her Master of Arts degree from City University of New York. Also in 1977, Sandra was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from New York University.
Adickes began her career as an assistant registrar at New York University in 1954. A year later she took a position of a secretary at J. Walter Thompson Company LLC. Then in 1960, Sandra was appointed a teacher of English at New York City Department of Education, where she worked until 1970 and again in 1980-1988.
Also in 1970, she held a position of an instructor of education at New York City Technology College. Two years later Adickes became an assistant professor of English at College of Staten Island. Then in 1977, Sandra took a position of a director at Brooklyn College and held it for three years.
She worked as an associate professor and professor at Winona State University from 1988 to 1998. Since 1998 Sandra has been a professor emeritus at the same university. In addition, Adickes is an adjunct professor of Women's and Gender Studies Program at College of New Jersey.
