Sanetoki Hojo

Background

Sanetoki Hojo was born in 1224. He was the son grandson of Yoshitoki.

Education

Occupying important posts in the Kamakura Shogunate, he loved learning. Studied under Noritaka Kiyohara, who had followed Prince Munetaka (who was made Shogun in Kamakura) from Kyoto. He collected Chinese and Japanese books and preserved them at his villa at Kanazawa (near Yokohama).

Career

This was the origin of the famous Kanazawa Library. The library was replenished by his grandson, Akitoki. Although it was in dilapidated condition after the downfall of the Hojos, it was restored by Kanezane Uesugi and, in the Tokugawa Period, many books of the library were moved to the Shogunate Castle in Edo.
