When Prince Mochihito rose in arms against the Taira family in 1180 and led his army to Onjoji Temple near Lake Biwa, he prevented the priests of the Enryakuji and Kofukuji Temples from joining the prince’s campaign by offering them bribes.
When Yoritomo Minamoto rose against the Tairas in eastern Japan, he joined the expedition against Yoritomo of Koremori Taira.
Tadakiyo was defeated on the Fuji River (Shizuoka Prefecture) but beat Yukiie Minamoto at Sumatagawa. In his campaign against Yoshinaka Kiso, Tadakiyo lost his son, Tadatsuna, in a battle and he became a priest.
Later, he joined the forces of Ietsugu Taira in Iga Province (Mie Prefecture) but was captured by troops of Yoritomo and was put to death in Kyoto.
