Background
Saneyoshi Tokudaiji was born in 1096 in Japan. He was the fifth son of Kinzane Fujiwara.

Career
Saneyoshi Tokudaiji was attached to the Imperial Court when Emperor Toba fell fatally ill. Realizing what this meant, specially when the political situation was tense, he persuaded the Emperor to leave a will. This he did after extracting vows of fealty to his house from Tameyoshi Minamoto, Kiyomori Taira and others. He entrusted the will to his mistress Bifuku-Mon-in and soon after passed away. Civil war followed his death, but as countermeasures had already been prepared the revolt was soon quelled.
Saneyoshi was then appointed Sadaijin (Minister of Left) (1156) but resigned the following year to become a priest with the name of Shinri. He later founded the Tokudaiji Temple, which came to be known as Tokudaiji Palace. He was the founder also of the Tokudaiji family line.
