Santiago Rusinol was born on February 25, 1861 in Barcelona, Spain. He was the son of a rich businessman from Barcelona.
Santiago was trained as a painter at the Watercolour Center of Barcelona (Centro de Acuarelistas de Barcelona) under the direction of Tomas Moragas. Rusinol also attended the Gervex Academy in Paris, where he discovered his love for Modernism.
Since 1889 to 1899, Santiago lived in Paris, where he exhibited his works at the Salons. His paintings of that period are basically landscapes, urban themes, portraits and also Art Nouveau symbolic compositions. During those years, he developed an addiction to morphine, that would cause him serious health problems. In 1899, the painter returned to Spain, where he became the leader of the Modernist movement and established the museum Cau Ferrat.
In the twentieth century, Rusinol entered a new creative phase, marked by his dedication to theater and his specialization in painting gardens all over Spain.
In addition to his activities as a painter, he also was a writer of some repute. Rusinol started to write at the age of twenty. His first writings were nature descriptions and letters, especially those to his future wife Lluisa Denis. These texts were very important for him to test his grasp of language.
Rusinol was also tempted by the theatre. He wrote various plays with enormous success, like "Els Jocs Florals de Canprosa", "El Pati Blau" and also a large series of dramas, comedies and vaudevilles, culminating in 1917 with the theater version of "L’Auca del Senyor Esteve".
