Tipping the Velvet, Sarah Waters brilliantly evokes the sights and smells of a moody and beguiling nineteenth-century London, and proves herself yet again a storyteller, in the words of the New York Times Book Review, of "startling power."

Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksby’s household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thieves—fingersmiths—for whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home.

Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch tells the story of four Londoners—three women and a young man with a past—whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event.

(One postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, Dr....)
One postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country physician, is called to a patient at lonely Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, the Georgian house, once impressive and handsome, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at twenty to nine. Its owners—mother, son, and daughter—are struggling to keep pace with a changing society, as well as with conflicts of their own. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life? Little does Dr. Faraday know how closely, and how terrifyingly, their story is about to become intimately entwined with his.

Sarah Ann Waters was born on July 21, 1966, in Neyland, Pembrokeshire, Wales, to Ron Waters, an engineer of oil refineries, and Mary Waters, a housewife.
Waters studied at Milford Haven Grammar School. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kent, a Master of Arts from Lancaster University, and a Ph.D. from Queen Mary, University of London.
After her graduation, Sarah Waters managed to work in a bookstore and in a library for a short time. While working on her doctoral dissertation ("Lesbian and Gay Prose from 1870 to the Present Time"), she developed material and inspiration for future novels. As part of her research, she read 19th-century pornography, from which came the name of her first novel Tipping The Velvet, an expression of Victorian slang meaning lesbian sex. The name of the novel “Fingersmith” also came from an old slang - it means a pocket thief and, in addition, a midwife.
While reading a lesbian / gay-oriented prose, Waters noticed that this literature has not changed much since the 19th century - as a rule, these are books of a low level, “light”, without serious ambitions. Waters has set her task to write novels far more complex and of high quality. Immediately after defending her dissertation, she began to write her first novel, which she really enjoyed working on, had to conduct serious research work, and this is exactly what she loves.
Sarah Waters was for a time an associate lecturer for the Open University and has also tutored on Creative Writing programmes, but is now a full-time fiction writer living in London.

2009Waters has politically always identified herself as on the left of the political spectrum.
Sarah's novels include elements of a thriller, a detective story; sometimes the influence of the Gothic tradition is noticeable. The author competently works with historical realities, social context and psychological characters.
Quotations:
"You’re all leaving Goldsmiths with many ambitions, some of you like me might want to read more books, some of you may never want to read a book again. Some of you might want to write books. You need to cultivate skills, and have patience, self-belief, and nerdiness helps – the ability to dedicate yourself to isolation…"
"Empathy is the most valuable quality of all, not just for novelists but for all of us."
"I'm writing with a clear lesbian agenda in the novels. It's right there at the heart of the books."
"When empathy fails catastrophe follows."
Waters was a member of the long-running London North Writers circle. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2009.
