Scott Heim attained Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from University of Kansas in 1989. He continued his studies and in 1991 got his Master of Arts degree at the same university. Two years later, in 1993, Heim received Master of Fine Arts degree, graduating from Columbia University.
Heim wrote his first novel, Mysterious Skin, when he studied at Columbia University. In 2008, his third novel, We Disappear, was published as a paperback original with Harper Perennial.
Scott Heim started publishing a series of music-related nonfiction collections called "The First Time I Heard" in 2012, for which the novelist serves as an editor.
