(The subject of self-management - of companies in which th...)
The subject of self-management - of companies in which the decisions are made by the workforce rather than by the managers or owners - has long been of interest both to economists and to a wider audience. In this 1984 book, Saul Estrin offers a comprehensive survey of how workers' self-management has influenced the industrial structure and the allocation of resources in Yugoslavia, where a system of this type has operated since the 1950s. The book will interest economists concerned with the likely impact of workers' participation as well as specialists in self-management theory and the operation of the Yugoslav economy.

(This book provides an overview of the privatization issue...)
This book provides an overview of the privatization issues within Central and Eastern Europe. It seeks to tackle both the theoretical questions and to reflect upon the experiences in key privatization experiments. In the country papers, the contributors have sought to explain the economic, political, and social nature of the privatization process. This approach is supported by a theoretical section, which tries to consider the privatization process in the transitional economies thematically. Issues which recur in the country experiences, and which are treated in the first part of the book, include the speed of privatization, finance, and corporate governance, political questions and income and wealth distribution.

Provides analysis of the scope and pattern of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and the economic transition from planned to market economy in Central and Eastern Europe. The first four chapters, which include an overview of FDI in transition economies and discussion of the nature and scope of FDI in central and eastern European countries are followed by ten case studies, which form the core of the volume. The case studies view FDI from the perspective of the investing firm, the recipient firm or sector, the host government, suppliers, retailers, and capital market observers.

(This book explores the relationship between competition p...)
This book explores the relationship between competition policy and economic integration in the enlarging European Union. It contains valuable contributions from academics and officials from inside and outside the European Union as well as offering a transatlantic perspective on the enabling effect of competition policy on deepening European integration. The book examines the importance of competition policy in the Europe Agreements signed with the Central and East European countries, whilst emphasizing that agreement on the adoption of competition rules is just one element in the complex process of accession to the European Union. The contributors argue that harmonization of competition policy along EU lines across the wider Europe is necessary to create a culture of competition among the European partner countries.

Under the auspices of a 1996/97 research project of the Central and Eastern European Privatization Network, a dozen 12 contributors most hailing from the countries under discussion examine the thesis that improved governance of funds will, in turn, have a positive multiplier effect on corporate governance of newly privatized companies in the transitional economies of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovenia.

1994Saul's research has long focused on the micro-economics of comparative economic systems, with early interests in state-owned firms, labor-managed firms, planning, and socialist economies. He was involved in the transition economies moving from socialism to capitalism, researching as well as policy advising on issues around privatization and the improved performance of labor markets.
In recent years, he has concentrated on international business strategy issues and entrepreneurship. His work on international business has been concerned with the factors driving foreign direct investment to emerge economies, and the impact of that investment on the host countries. More recently, he has analyzed the behavior and performance of some archetypical enterprise types in emerging economies, namely Business Groups and State-Owned firms. He has also contributed to the literature on multinational enterprises from emerging economies, including case studies of firms from Turkey and China.
His research on entrepreneurship has focused on the institutional environment conducive to more ambitious forms of entrepreneurialism, with papers about the impact of institutional quality, the impact of state interventionism, innovation, and social entrepreneurship.
He is currently working on equity crowdfunding and angel investing, institutional factors conducive to entrepreneurship and innovation, including cultural factors, and the economics of social entrepreneurship.
