Seibe Kashima was born in Hyogo Prefecture to a family of sake brewers.
Seibe Kashima was adopted by the millionaire Kashima family of Tokyo at an early age. In this luxurious life he gave himself up to entertainment and took interest in magic lanterns and photography.
Helped Isshin Ogawa in his photographic research and business and later opened a large studio called "Genrokukan", which became very lucrative after the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). As a result Seibe Kashima began living lavishly and even bought out a geisha girl named Ponta. His fortune soon dwindled away in this fashion and he was compelled to open a small shop to subsist. Throughout his adversity Ponta remained true to him. Later, unable to keep the shop going became a flute player for a Noh theater.
