Fond of martial arts from childhood, he was good especially at archery and swordsmanship. He mastered the art of using the sword of the Jiki-Shinkage school under Shimpan sai Danno.
Seiichiro Odani served the Shogunate Government and made many recommendations on national defense affairs. The Shogunate's Kobusho, or Martial Arts Institute, was established (1855) at the recommendation of Odani. He was head of the institute and its swordsmanship master.
A man of genial character, he warned his disciples against adhering to only one single school and recommended learning from various schools.
