His master was Priest Tozen of the Unkyokuan Temple in Suo Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture) who called himself Sesshu IX. Sekkan became his disciple when he came to Mito at the invitation of Lord Mitsukuni Tokugawa.
Sekkan's pictures were featured by powerful strokes of the brush. He left many portraits. Went to Edo later and endeavored to restore the Sesshu school of painting. His disciples included Ranzan and Priest Gessen.
His daughter Setsuko (Shiizan) and his niece Sessen were also noted artists.
