Senshun was born in 1540 in Shiga, Japan. He belonged to the Fujiwara family.
He became a priest at the Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei in 1553. When Nobunaga Oda burned the temple (1571), Senshun fled to the Kannonji Temple in Awada District where his elder brother, Ranchin, lived. Ranchin introduced Senshun to Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The warlord, impressed by the intrepid character of Senshun, favored him.
Another priest, Zenshu of the Yakujuin Temple, was also a protege of Hideyoshi at the time. The two priests collaborated in rebuilding the Enryakuji Temple.
