Seppo Jalmari Laine is a Finnish-American astronomer whose research examines galaxy structure, bars, mergers, radio and infrared emission, and the evolution of galaxies. His career has included the University of Florida, the University of Hertfordshire, the University of Kentucky, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and the California Institute of Technology’s Spitzer Science Center.
Background
Laine was born on March 9, 1965, in Raisio, Finland, to Raimo Jalmari Laine and Aino-Ritva Kaukinen Laine. Raisio is a city in the southwest Finnish region surrounding Turku, an area with a long connection to higher education, technology, and scientific research.
He later moved to the United States for graduate study. His professional record identifies citizenship in both Finland and the United States, reflecting a career that developed between Finnish astronomical research and major American observatories and research institutions.
Education
Laine received a Master of Science degree in astronomy from the University of Turku in 1990. The university, founded in 1920, is one of Finland’s principal research universities and is located in a region with longstanding scientific and technological institutions.
He pursued graduate study at the University of Florida, where he received a Ph.D. in astronomy on December 21, 1996. His dissertation, Observations and Modeling of the Gas Dynamics of the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 7479, examined the motion of gas in a barred spiral galaxy. During his graduate years he also taught and supervised undergraduate astronomy laboratory work.
Laine began his research career at the University of Turku, working on quasar research in 1989–1990 and in an astronomical-optics research group during the summer of 1989. At the University of Florida he was a graduate student and teaching assistant from 1990 to 1996, combining doctoral research on barred spiral galaxies with undergraduate laboratory instruction.
From 1997 to 1999 he was a post-doctoral research assistant in the Department of Physical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, United Kingdom. He then worked as a post-doctoral research assistant in astronomy at the University of Kentucky from 1999 to 2000 and as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore from 2000 to 2002. These appointments involved astronomical data reduction, observing proposals, collaboration, and scientific writing, including work with Hubble Space Telescope observations.
In September 2002 Laine joined the Spitzer Science Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, initially as a staff scientist and later as a research scientist. His work included independent research using space-based and ground-based instruments, analysis of Spitzer Space Telescope data, scientific publications, user support for the Infrared Array Camera, documentation, proposal review, and participation in planning associated with the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope. His research has addressed galactic bars, mergers, accretion events, radio astronomy, infrared astronomy, stellar streams, active galaxies, and multiwavelength observations.
Laine's astronomical research has contributed to the study of barred and merging galaxies through observations and modeling of gas dynamics, stellar bars, nuclear structures, radio jets, and infrared emission.
He served as principal investigator or co-investigator on observing programs using facilities including the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, Very Large Array, European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network, and other radio, optical, and infrared observatories.
He participated in astronomical outreach, peer review, scientific advisory work, and supervision of graduate and undergraduate researchers during his appointments at the Space Telescope Science Institute and the Spitzer Science Center.

Religion
Laine is identified with Lutheran Christianity, the Protestant tradition that emerged from the sixteenth-century Reformation and became historically prominent in Finland. Finnish Lutheranism has been associated with congregational life, biblical teaching, education, and a strong national cultural presence.
His documented affiliation belongs to the religious and cultural setting in which he was raised and educated in Finland before pursuing astronomical research in the United States and elsewhere.
Views
Laine's scientific work reflects an observational and quantitative approach to astronomy, combining imaging, spectroscopy, radio observations, infrared measurements, and modeling to study how galaxies are structured and evolve. His research connects the dynamics of bars, mergers, accretion events, star formation, and active galactic nuclei with observations across multiple wavelengths.
Membership
Laine has been a member of the American Astronomical Society since 1991, the International Astronomical Union since 2015, and the S4G Spitzer Exploration Science Team since 2010. He was also associated with the Royal Astronomical Society from 1997 to 1999 and has held membership in Phi Beta Kappa since 1997.
The American Astronomical Society and International Astronomical Union are major professional bodies that support astronomical research, conferences, publications, and international scientific cooperation. The S4G team is connected with the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, which used infrared observations to investigate the structure of nearby galaxies.
