In 1895, graduated from the Glukhov Teachers Institute. From 1905, lived in the Crimea. Travelled all over Russia and wrote books about his travels.
First story published in 1898. Main work, Sevastopolskaia Strada, 1937-1939, received the Stalin Literary Prize, 1941. Academician, 1943. Also wrote plays.
After his death, a museum was set up in Alushta in his honour.
