Founder and chairman of the Russian Microbiology Society, 1903. Emigrated after the Bolshevik take-over, 1922. Head of the Agrobiology Department of the Pasteur Institute in Paris, 1922-1953.

Member of the French Academy of Sciences and fellow of the Royal Society.
