Sergei Konstantinovich Ternovoy is one of the brightest representatives of modern radiation diagnostics, Academician of RAMS. For more than 40 years of work in medicine, he has done a lot for the development of domestic radiology. Thanks to his efforts, X-ray computed tomography (CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were introduced into practice in the USSR.
Background
Sergey was born on October 13, 1948, in Odessa, Ukraine. His father, a graduate of the Odessa Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov worked for many years as a traumatologist and taught at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the Odessa Medical Institute. He defended his thesis and doctoral dissertations devoted to the problems of traumatology and orthopedics. His mother, a neurologist, worked for many years in the Odessa Neurological Dispensary. Constant medical conversations in the family, a departure from the father for urgent night calls to the regional hospital predetermined the vital aspirations of S.K. Ternovy already in high school.
Education
In 1966, S.K. Ternovoi graduated with honors from the medical faculty of the Odessa Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov and entered postgraduate course at the Department of Radiology. At the department, the formation of S.K. Ternovy as a doctor and teacher passed. In 1975 he defended his thesis on the diagnosis of primary and secondary bone tumors. In 1984 S.K. Ternovoi defended his doctoral dissertation on the diagnosis of volumetric abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum space by the method of X-ray computed tomography.
In 1977 he took part in the competition for the vacant position of associate professor at the Department of Radiology in Odessa Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov. In 1978 the medical life of S.K. Turnovoy dramatically changed. He was invited by Academician E.I. Chazov to master and lead in the Central Hospital of the IV Main Directorate under the Ministry of Health of the USSR a fundamentally new direction - X-ray computed tomography. In 1984 clinical studies were continued at the Institute of Cardiology named after A.L. Myasnikov of All-Union Cardiological Scientific Center of USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1990 Professor S.K. Ternovoy headed this laboratory, which was transformed into a department of tomography. In 1996 S.K. Ternovoy headed the largest in the country department of radiation diagnosis and radiation therapy of the MMA named after I.M. Sechenov.
Achievements
In 1975 he defended his thesis on the diagnosis of primary and secondary bone tumors. In 1977 he took part in the competition for the vacant position of associate professor at the same department.
Since 1979, together with NASA and the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, to study the effect of weightlessness on the bone tissues of astronauts, a joint project has been launched. In 1984 S.K. Ternovoi defended his doctoral dissertation on the diagnosis of volumetric abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum space by the method of X-ray computed tomography.
In 1983 S.K. Ternovoy, together with Y.N. Belenkov began to work on the possibility of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of various pathological processes.
Professor S.K. Ternovoy together with professors O.Y. Atkov and V.N. Titov developed the medical ideology of the work of diagnostic centers and their relationship with the already existing medical and preventive institutions of the country. S.K. Ternovoy developed and introduced into the educational process a series of thematic improvement cycles that have been applied to the present day.
In recent years, Academician S.K. Ternovoy has been focusing on the problems of teaching the specialty at various stages of student and doctor training and questions of early diagnosis of socially significant diseases.
