Sesson Satakes was born in 1504 in Iwashiro (Fukushima Prefecture), Japan. He belonged to the Satakes, a wealthy family in the area.
He is said to have become a priest because his father made his brother the heir in preference to Sesson. Because he lived always in out-of-the-way places remote from Kyoto, the art center, little is known about his life. He temporarily lived in Odawara at the invitation of the lord of the area. Although he painted in the tradition of Sesshu, he never was directly trained by the great master.
He displayed originality in the selection of subjects and in the method of brushing which were absent from Sesshu's works. He was good at painting birds, flowers and landscapes alike. His landscapes are said to have a Korean touch. He did not paint on silk cloth but on a paper which was called Sesson paper.
