Setha Marilyn Low is an American psychology and anthropology educator, consultant, author and artist, based in New York.

Background

Setha Marilyn Low was born on March 14, 1948 in Los Angeles, California, United States. She is the daughter of Seth and Marilyn (Rudley) Low.

Education

Low received her Bachelor in Psychology and Biology at Pitzer College in Claremont in 1969. Two years later she graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Master of Arts in Anthropology in 1971. In 1976 Low earned her doctorate in Anthropology at University of California at Berkeley in 1976.

She also received a Master of Arts (honorary) from University Pennsylvania in 1983.

Career

Low started her career at the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. She worked there as a faculty associate, associate professor and assistant professor of different departments till 1988. Low also worked as a co-director of Medical Anthropology Program of the university from 1980. During her long teaching career, Low also served as a visiting professor at New York University in 1995 and visiting lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania from 1992 till 2004.

Since 1989, Low works as a professor of the environmental psychology and anthropology at the Graduate Center in New York. She also works as a director of Public Space Research Group at the Center for Human Environments (since 1995), research associate of the Centre for Anthropological Research at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa (since 2010), adjunct professor at the City College of New York (since 2002) and distinguished research affiliate at Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (since 2013).

Since 2002, Low also works as an artist, holding her exhibitions in New York and on the East End.

Achievements

  • Setha Low is best known as a psychology and anthropology educator and author. She wrote more than 70 works in the field of anthropology and psychology and became a recipient of various grants and fellowships from different organizations, associations and universities. She is also a contributor of more than fifty articles and reviews to scholarly journals, including American Ethnologist, Cultural Resources Management, Social Text, Landscape Journal, Human Organization, and City and Society.

    Low is also known for her art works, exhibited in galleries and public venues both on the East End and in New York City.
