Settsu-daijo Takemoto was born in 1836 in Osaka, Japan. He was the son of a merchant.
He was adopted by Ihachi Futami, a carpenter who was an amateur Joruri reciter, from whom he learnt to play the samisen. He became a disciple of Kichibe Nozawa III and then of Harudayu V.
He was the chief reciter of Bunrakuza Theater (1883).
