(Since the Peters Colony was the first and largest empresa...)
Since the Peters Colony was the first and largest empresario grant made by the Republic of Texas, there is necessarily contained in this book a substantial account .of the land policy of the Republic. Included are the background and results of the Significant Law of February 4, 1511, which authorized the establishment of a contract between twenty American and English petitioners, led by William Smalling Peters, and the Republic of Texas. The area of the original grant was greatly increased by three later contracts to cover all or part of twenty-six present North Texas counties, with the principal settlements being made in present Grayson, Collin, Denton, Tarrant, and Dallas counties. A split in the company resulted ill tile American stockholders' re-organizing as tile Texas Immigration and Land Company in 1S14. Tile venture was plagued by further misunderstanding and controversy which climaxed in the Hedgcoxe War of 1852. Though tile enterprise was not considered to be a monetary success by either the investors or the Republic, it initiated a stream of migration from the Ohio River Valley to North Texas which continued for several decades. Biographical sketches of the colonists give further valuable data on early settlement of this North Texas area.

( The Texas State Historical Association is pleased to pa...)
The Texas State Historical Association is pleased to partner with the Collin County Historical Society to make Seymour V. Connor’s The Peters Colony of Texas available once again. This classic work of Texas history, long out of print, was praised by John H. Jenkins in Basic Texas Books as the best study of one of the largest land grants in Texas history.” The TSHA first published The Peters Colony of Texas in 1959. The Peters Colony, totaling 16,000 square miles of North Texas, now includes twenty-six counties. Jenkins called it a masterpiece of weaving together the threads of an extremely difficult historical puzzle with only the meagerest of source materials.” For many years the book, with its documentation of early migration to Texas, was available to the public only in noncirculating library collections and an occasional appearance on the rare book market. The TSHA and the Collin County Historical Society are pleased to offer a paperback edition of The Peters Colony of Texas to bring this significant work of Texas history back to public attention.
