Educated at the Evangelical School of Asmara and at Comboni College in Khartoum, Sudan. His university career started in 1951 at the University College of Addis Ababa, followed by the American University of Beirut from 1951 to 1954, Syracuse Law School from 1954 to 1955 and Harvard Law School from 1955 to 1957, where he took a Doctor Jurist degree.
He entered government as a Junior Legal Adviser in 1957 and became Director-General for Parliamentary and Legal Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office in 1958, rising to Vice-Minister in 1962. From 1963 to 1965 he acted as Minister of Information and on several occasions as Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs or Communications and Mines.
But the base for his whole career has been in the office of Akilu Habte Wold the Prime Minister. Under him Seyoum Haregot was promoted Head of the Office and a member of the Council of Ministers in 1966 and a full Minister in 1968.
Outside politics, he is on the Board of Ethiopian Airlines and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and chairman of the Haile Selassie I Prize Trust. He is also on the Board of Governors of Asmara University.
