Sharon Elizabeth Rush was born on December 22, 1951, in Jasper, Indiana, United States, to William Porter Rush, an Air Force career officer, and Betty Iveline (Wright) Rush.
Rush attended Albany Law School. In 1974, she received a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University, and a Juris Doctor in 1980.
Rush began her career as an associate from 1980 to 1982 at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in Washington, District of Columbia. From 1982 to 1985, she was an assistant professor at DePaul University, and then became an associate professor of law. From 1986 to 1988, she was an associate professor at the University of Florida - Gainesville, and from 1988 to 1989, became a professor. From 1988 to 1989, she served as an associate dean at the University of Florida Levin College of Law in Gainesville, Florida. In 2001, she was named Associate Director of Center on Children & the Law and was a co-founder of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations.
Professor Rush's current research projects focus on the relationship between group political power and an individual's right to equal protection.
