Shelley Marshall Payne was born on July 24, 1950 in Jasper, Texas, United States; daughter of Robert Earl and Margaret Nida (Aden) Marshall.
Payne received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in 1972. Five years later she was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Payne began her career as a postdoctoral fellow of the department of biochemistry at the University of California in 1977. Three years later she took a position of an assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Texas. Then in 1985, Shelley became an associate professor at the same university. Since 1990 she has been a professor at the University of Texas. Also since 1993 Shelley has served as a chairman of microbiology department at that university.
Payne is a member of American Academy of Microbiology and American Society of Microbiology.
On January 1, 1972 Shelley Payne married David Eugene Payne. They have a child.
